Music videos can be expensive items. It hurts spending thirty, fifty or even a hundred grand of your hard-earned money on something you – basically – give away for free!
So, it can be very tempting to save some money by shooting your own music video. I mean, video cameras come on cell phones nowadays, and HDTV is becoming less expensive. Cameras are everywhere. They’re ubiquitous. And, deep down, everyone really fancies themselves a director – sorry, an auteur, don’t they?…
So, should you consider going it alone and shooting your own music video?
The short answer: NO.
Directors, producers, cinematographers and production designers are all artisans. It takes years of study and work experience to become a decent film-maker. You wouldn’t leave your cd layout to some guy you passed on the street, would you? So why even consider doing something as important as your first music video all by yourself? It may look like simple work, but believe me, producing and directing ain’t easy!
Can you tell the difference between a lower budget independent movie and a Hollywood summer blockbuster? Of course you can! That’s exactly the difference between shooting the video yourself and hiring a professional. You don’t know how to make the movie look that glossy and perfect – but the professionals do! The best you could hope for is a decent indie flick. Sure, every once in a while a home-made music video comes along and does well. But, can you even think of one (and, no, Fatboy Slim’s “Praise You” was NOT an indie video, the budget was actually massive). So, stick with the professionals. Let them do it all for you.
However, the single biggest reason I would dissuade you from shooting your own music video is probably not one you would have guessed:
Insurance!
Film crews often contain twenty, thirty, or even hundreds of people. There’s typically massive amounts of power being run through thick cables (often submerged in puddles) up to precariously hung lights with a virtual windmill of large, exposed, sharp metal edges (and all this at about 600 degrees celcius). A film set is literally an accident waiting to happen.
Plus, adding to the inherent dangers of a film set, music video shoots tend to be even more dangerous (music video productions don’t tend to have very much money for things like saftey experts and safety harnesses). Maverick directors love to put their subjects into harm’s way. And, on low-budget shoots, you can often hear things like: “We don’t need an expensive car-mount – let’s just throw the cameraman on the hood! Don’t worry, we’ll tie him down…”
So, if you do decide to shoot your video yourself, just make sure no one trips over a light stand! It could cost you your life savings.
Legitimate production companies will have production insurance that covers the workplace (this insurance would cost you around one or two thousand dollars – just for the one music video).
Professional producers and production managers will have access to much better crew members than you will. If you only have a thousand dollars to hire a director of photography (cinematographer), I guarantee you I’ll be able to hire a MUCH better DoP than you will! So, unless you have contacts in the industry, you should probably consider hiring a production company to do all the producing for you. You’ll get a much higher quality crew that way.
And, one final note…
If you’re shooting on 35mm film (which I strongly recommend – unless there’s a VERY good reason not to), you’ll need to rent a camera that’s worth around half a million bucks! And, that camera doesn’t come with any lenses (or tripods, or dollies, or film magazines, etc…). You’ll have to rent all that separately. So, unless you have a VERY high limit on your credit card, the camera house might not even be willing to rent to you. You might even have to mortgage your house to cover the deposit!
Established production companies rent camera packages all the time (a decent music video package will be at least one or two thousand dollars a day), and often receive significant discounts from the rental house that you wouldn’t be able to get. So, by going with an established production company, you’ll actually be getting a considerably better equipment package than if you had done it yourself (producers also know how to get film at about a quarter the price you’d be able to).
So, overall, you’ll get a much better bang-for-your-buck by hiring a professional producer or production company to shoot your music video for you. It will also save you an unbelievable amount of time and effort. And, in the end, isn’t that what you want for your first video: The abolute best music video possible?

While there is certainly nothing wrong with making your own videos and releasing them on YouTube – in fact I completely recommend that you do – there is a very powerful way to get thousands of visitors, either to your own videos, your band’s website, or better yet, a promotional offer such as “sign up to our mailing list to get our new single for free”, or some other such thing, by simply paying other YouTube users to include a link to your site within their description box.
If you don’t quite know what I’m talking about go to Youtube and search the most viewed videos. You should find a few examples of videos with the link within the description box.
To the right of the video you should see a link. This is an example of what I’m talking about.
To do this you simply take the following steps.
Search YouTube with keywords that relate in some way to your song or your band. For example, if you had done a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit you might search words like Nirvana, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Grunge, etc.
Next, sort the results by “view count”. You’re looking for videos with hundreds of thousands, or even millions of views. Disregard any videos that are posted by the artist themselves or any videos that already have a link in the description box.
Then all you have to do is send the users of relevant videos a message explaining that you would like to pay them on a monthly bases to place your link in there description box.
You will probably only find that 1 in every 10 or 20 people are interested in your offer, but if even one link on a highly viewed video can mean thousands of new visitors, and potential new fans every month.

How to Create Your Own Professional Music Video from Home
Today, many who go web-surfing run into spoof music videos that get millions of views. Sadly, more than half of those people who got 1,000,000+ views missed an opportunity of earning $20,000 or more from just that YouTube upload. Why is this so? I will let you know near the end of this article. Shall we get back to the topic?
For those who think it isn’t possible to make a high quality music video from home like the ones you see on television, I am here to tell you that it IS possible to make even BETTER videos. You may not be able to create one as good on the first try, but again who is? It takes perfection; following these 5 steps:
Step 1: Music
Of course a music video isn’t a music video without music. Find an instrumental that you want to create a song to and download it. A good program that I recommend for downloading instrumentals would be Frostwire. You can download it from frostwire.com. It is completely free to download and use. Or so it was the last time I checked. Be careful when downloading from Frostwire though. The first two or three files at the top are usually tricks, but you can easily tell them apart. The false ones usually match your search phrase word for word, letter for letter, and are lower case. Also check the file size to the right of each result. Instrumentals and songs are usually at an average file size of 1,000 Kb for each minute of a song. So if an instrumental you’re looking for is about 3 minutes long, the file size should be around 3,000 Kb. The false ones at the top are usually at a small file size, around 10-30 kb.
I used to use Frostwire until I began creating my own music with music production software. If you want to make money from YouTube, I suggest you make your own instrumentals like I do. Anyone can learn to make a simple beat. Some good music production software I recommend to use for the PC would be Fruity Loops Studio. The latest version is FL Studio 9, but FL Studio 5, 6, 7, and 8 are just as good. If you want to pay for it, you can buy it at your local computer store or online at flstudio.com, but if you want it for free, I suggest you use Frostwire, since it can also download programs for free too. For the Mac users, your computer should already come with a music production software called GarageBand. In my opinion, GarageBand’s instruments sound more professional than Fruity Loops. Both programs have user manuals available in the help menu and Garageband has a beginner tutorial. For any other tutorials, I suggest that you search YouTube for Fruity Loops Beginner Tutorials or Garageband beginner tutorials.
Other PC Music Production softwares include Reason, Sonar, and Nuendo. Another Mac music production software is Logic Pro. The music industry itself specializes mainly with a software called Protools. It’s compatible with both PC and Mac, but is usually the software preferred for studio recording. If you decide to use Protools at all, I recommend that you buy it rather than downloading it for many reasons. Trust me on this one.
Step 2: Lyrics
Of course, music videos don’t ALWAYS have lyrics, but if you do decide to, make sure you write lyrics to the instrumental and keep them for the studio recording, which we will get to later. (Lyrical tip: Keep your lyrics fairly clean and it may be more marketable! Make it hilarious or comical, and it may get more plays! Ex. Search “White and Nerdy” on YouTube)
Step 3: Home Studio (Session) Recording
The best software for studio session recording starters is Cool Edit Pro. Cool Edit Pro is only PC compatible though. I learned it on my own through experimentation, but for tutorials, I’m sure you can find them on YouTube. There is also a user manual in the help menu. You can also download Cool Edit Pro for free using Frostwire. For the Mac users, once again, congratulations! You can record yourself using Garageband! To do so after you have finished creating your instrumental on Garageband, at the top click Track> New Track> Real Instrument> Create. You will notice that on the left, a track for recording appears that is titled “No Effects”. If you have a microphone plugged in, test it out by speaking into it. The green bar next to “No Effects” should rise everytime you speak. If not, check your System Preferences for Sound and switch to Built-In Mic/Internal Microphone. Most Mac laptops have a built-in microphone. Most of them are found on the left speaker at the bottom right side, but only on laptops. For PC laptops, your microphone may be found in the top of the monitor in the middle, left, or right corner.
For more advanced users, session recordings can be done with Protools. You can buy microphones, but the cheap ones are usually not good recording microphones at all. If you have a built-in microphone, you’re in luck; because believe it or not, it is better than most microphones under $50. Just make sure you adjust the volumes of each separate recording you do accordingly, regardless of which mic you use. You can make a bad mic sound much better than it does by altering the volumes.
P.S Tip: How to Autotune
Unfortunately, I only know how to do Autotune with the Fruity Loops users and the Garageband users. For the FL users, you have to download a plug-in called Antares and drag it into Fruity Loops. As for the Mac and Garageband users….. you guys are very lucky. GarageBand comes with a built-in Autotuning system. To use it, at the top click Track> New Track> Real Instrument> Create. If your Audio Region at the bottom is not visible, at the top, click Control> Show Editor, or just press Apple+E. Turn the “Enhance Tuning” in your Audio Region all the way up. Then look just below that switch, and check in the box “Limit to Key”.
Step 4: Recording the video
To record the video, you’re going to need a decent quality camera. But just because you have a decent quality camera alone doesn’t mean that the video is going to be great. It’s all about how you put it together. As far as quality goes, I recommend the Jazz Elite HD Portable Camera for starters. It’s a $500 high definition camera, but you can get it for only $240 at electrotech.totalwarehouse.com. I haven’t found a cheaper high definition video camera online yet, but if I do, I will let you know. Also, looking into getting a tripod would help for stabilization. You can find those at Wal-mart for pretty low prices.
Also, if you’re trying to make money on YouTube, make sure to keep other company products’ logos and titles out of the video as much as possible. YouTube can prevent money making from almost any logo being shown publicly in your video. This also includes logos on shirts, so just make sure that whatever clothing you choose to wear for the video, that the emblems or logos of your shirt’s producers are not visible.
Step 5: Putting the video together
Hook up your camera to the computer and transport all of your video clips in a folder. For PC video production beginners, I recommend using Windows Movie Maker. It comes with every Windows computer. If you can’t find it, just click Start (or the windows icon for Vista users) at the bottom left side of the screen. Go to Programs> Accesssories> Windows Movie Maker, or Programs> Accessories> Entertainment> Windows Movie Maker. If you can’t find it in either of those places, go to My Computer, open up the Local Drive (usually C:), and go to the Program Files folder. Look for a folder called Windows Movie Maker and look for the startup icon. For Mac users, there is iMovie. The video clips can be dragged or imported into both of these programs to use. If your PC or Mac came with the Adobe Collection, you may also use Adobe Premiere Pro, which is compatible with both computers. Adobe After Effects is a more advanced software to use for special effects, but you can easily learn it through 10 short tutorials at videocopilot.net. A much more advanced video editor is Final Cut Pro for the Mac users, used by real industry movie makers.
There are video tutorials for all of these softwares on YouTube, but, in my opinion, Windows Movie Maker is ridiculously easy to use; but Adobe Premiere has more tools and effects that you can do to your video. Adobe Premiere also has green screen keying, which Movie Maker does not have. If you are looking to make music video production or music production a future career, I suggest you look into a college called Full Sail University. It is known as the “Harvard of Entertainment and Media Schools” and has one of the three best film programs in the world and the top 5 Recording Arts programs in the country. It is a high-paced school, and you can receive your Bachelor’s in either program in 20 months. To look further into this school, visit the Full Sail website.
Make sure you render your video in a high quality setting too. “Rendering” just means saving the video in video format. The higher the quality, the longer it may take to finish saving the video, but it may be worth it. If you have the Jazz Elite HD Portable Camera, you may not have to worry about quality as much.
Extra Step: Earn Money Through YouTube
To earn money, simply reach over 200,000 views with your video. YouTube will send you instructions on how to set it up and will review your video to make sure that there are no copyright infringements.
But as for music videos in general, I’ve seen the best and I’ve seen the worst. The quality of the final product all comes down to how you use these tools to the best of your creative ability. Show laziness in production, and lazy is how the final product will appear to be. Happy music making!
Virtually anyone can name an “oldies” tune at the drop of a hat. You don’t have to be a passionate music lover, you don’t have to know every word to every B side single. Many oldies have insinuated themselves inside the brains of people around the world.
What makes an Oldie?
Generally, the start of music we love today began in the 1940′s. Anything from the decades from the 40′s, 50′s, 60′s and perhaps (now that we’re well into the 21st century) even into the 70′s can be considered an “oldie.” And what’s the saying? Oldie but Goodie. Meaning, these songs are not just old and boring… they are classics in their own right.
Oldies music lyrics can be sung by different artists, can be set amid a backdrop of different instruments, but the lyrics remain unchanged, and the tune is recognizable to those who love them.
Some examples of oldies music include Elvis Presley tunes. And remember the Louis Armstrong classic from the 40′s, What a Wonderful World? Timeless. Ageless. We hear it today and we recognize it instantaneously. We sing along and feel the comfort of the words.
Oldies Music Lyrics: A different sense, a different style
Oldies music seems to have a different style than music of today. The music of the mid 20th century seemed more meaningful, beautiful in a sense, toward humanity and what it means to be in love with life. Though certainly there is music today that fills that bill, overwhelmingly there is more serenity to the oldies tunes. Different eras bring about different styles in music and today’s rapidly changing technology has brought about an advancement in music such as techno pop, rap, and dance mix. This music couldn’t have existed in the mid 20th century because the instruments used to reach these new musical heights had not yet been invented.
Some might even argue that if a 45 record does not exist for a music single, it is not a true oldie. Surely, as time marches on that definition will change as the number of actual 45′s in existence will dwindle. But certainly the idea of an “oldie” remains.
And conversely, some might argue (more than likely the older generation) that oldies don’t sound nearly as good if not played on a record player. Something about the scratch of the needle on the vinyl record perhaps that transports the person back to a simpler time. The crisp, clear melodies heard from a CD player more than likely sounding a bit hollow and empty to their ears.
Oldies Music Lyrics: Singers who have etched lyrics in our minds
Some other Oldies singers include: Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole singing “Unforgettable,” Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly singing “True Love,” nearly anything Frank Sinatra sings, of course. Art Garfunkel with “I only have eyes for you.” And the beauty of these is, just the mere mention of them on paper can bring back the lyrics and tunes inside your head.
If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save every day
Till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you
Jim Croce could not have said it any better, about a loved one, or about oldies music lyrics.
I started in music video production over 12 years ago first doing music videos for independent artists in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, but after my 4th “indie” music video I had my first major music video for U-God of the Wu-Tang Clan which aired on B.E.T’s Rap City.
I got into music video production because I would see music videos on TV made with high budgets that turned out crappy. I would always say “I could do way better with a lower budget”. So I put my money where my mouth was, brought a camera and an editing computer and 17 music videos later the rest is history.
Getting into music video production is very easy. Think about it. No matter where you live, there are music artists looking to pay someone to shoot and edit their music video – so you already have a starving market. But when most directors get their first music video, whether it be indie or celeb, they get 2 important things wrong. Let me explain.
First, if you want to get into music video production there’s one thing you need to know. Keep It Simple Stupid. Again, when I started I only had a camera (Canon XL1) and an editing computer. I didn’t have all the bells and whistles that most people in my field had.
When I got my first music video I kept the concept simple. The song had 3 verses so I shot 3 different performance scenes (the scenes where the artists are seen performing the song) for each verse and we went to a lot of different locations and shot b-roll footage (scenes that you see in music videos where no one is performing ie: car driving in slow motion or sexy girl slow grinding on someone in the club). It only took 2 days. By the time it was all said and done, I submitted it to B.E.T and it aired on Uncut and Rap City. You understood me right. My first music video aired on national TV.
I am a firm believer in “making it work with what you got” and as a film maker, you should always keep that in mind. Bigger budget does not always mean better final product. When you don’t have unlimited resources you’re forced to think and make do with what you’ve got, and some of the hottest music videos are born from that seed.
Next, you must know that to make a good music video you need good locations, extras, and props. Most importantly you need to know that you don’t have to pay for any of these; atleast I never have.
Lets talk about my first music video and one of it’s major locations, crazy props, and extras. I needed a church scene where a funeral was taking place and the choir was singing in the background. That meant I needed floral arrangements, a casket, an extra to play the guy laying in the casket, a church, a Reverend, and about 20 people to fill in the pews. All I did to get these items was simply ask.
To get the casket I went to a funeral home and told them I need a casket for someone to lay in for a music video shoot. Keep in mind when setting up a scene you have to think in real world time. Make your scene look the way it would in real life. That’s when it hit me that I needed flowers to go around the casket, so I asked the funeral home where could I get flowers to decorate the scene. They pointed me to a flower shop they worked with and they gave me a slew of floral arrangements made just for funerals.
My next feat was getting a church. This was a little more difficult being that it was a rap video and most churches don’t agree with that type of music. After being turned down by 3 different churches, I found a church that said yes. I had access to the choir and their reverend.
I had everything I needed for my scene all without paying a cent out of my budget. To achieve this, simply say “I need to use (name of item) for a music video shoot but we have exhausted our budget. If it’s OK we would like to use (name of item) for our shoot and we can give you credit at the end of the music video.”
I have never been told no (except for the 3 churches). Using this statement, I have used stranger’s vehicles, schools, resorts, hotels and many other props, locations and extras that most director’s pay for when they don’t have to. All it takes is just asking.
Just knowing these two things will make your entry into the music video production field as easy as mine was and if you are already in the music video industry, use this info to keep more of the budget in your pocket.
